November 25, 2009 Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, have asked the European Parliament in Strasbourg that the door to membership in the EU remain open for the West Balkan countries, Turkey and Iceland, and not to abandon the policy of enlargement. While representing the expansion strategy drafted by the EC, Bildt said that it would be a mistake of historic proportions to close the door to these countries, as it would open another door that would lead the countries of the region in a direction that would be wrong, according to him. He said that Serbia made a great progress by unilaterally implementing the Interim Trade Agreement and added that the positive report is expected on Belgrade’s cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. Rehn said that Belgrade demonstrated determination in the European integration and that therefore, the implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement should unblocked.
